Domaine Pierre Gonon really is the epitome of the Saint-Joseph appellation in the Northern Rhone, and they're generally considered the best winemakers in the area.
Now run by his two sons Pierre and Jean after Pierre Senior deemed himself too old to work the vines, the domaine makes the most powerful blockbuster SJ's we've ever had the pleasure to taste.

On the steep hills of the vineyards they plough by their horse Samson wherever they can, around 50% of the vineyard. When it is too hot or steep for a horse the brothers use a trident plough attached to a cable and winch, plus a small caterpillar tractor. In the ancient cave cellars they foot stomp to punch down during fermentation and bottle unfined and unfiltered.

This is power and opulence, stamping everything that the Syrah grape stands for in the bottle. Perfectly ripe blackberries, olive tapenade and liquorice with plenty of black pepper. In its youth the tannins are still quite firm, with Jean Gonon saying his sweet spot is at 8yrs, though still super enjoyable in it's youth especially with a little charcuterie on the side.
