Adeline Bonnet is the fourth generation of her family to farm the property and (with the help of her father) is the first to make Champagne. Her 5.5 Hectare-property is just outside Bragelogne, the Southernmost village of the Côte des Bar and consequently, Champagne. Piot-Sévillano is in the hands of Christine and Vincent, who are the 10th generation of independent growers to make wine on this family domaine. Located in Vincelles, in the Marne Valley, Christine and Vincent have been running the estate since 2007 and in 2011 they implemented new agricultural techniques in order to preserve their soils and biodiversity. Third generation, Corinne is the young gun, the ambitious winemaker slowly taking over from her traditional father. Brand new dream-team in one of our favourite French regions, Beaujolais, these school friends Sebastien Dupré and Guillaume Goujon grew up here and have had their domaine since 2015. Seb's uncle had dream plots on the S.E. facing slope of Côte de Brouilly, exceptional terroir in the Héronde and Pavé lieu-dits, but sold his grapes to the co-op. Château Julia (Sophie Martin) Pauillac, Bordeaux

On the sandy Médoc plains around the village of Pauillac, down a dirt track road there are two small parcels making up about 30 rows of 60-year-old Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted by Sophie Martin’s father and grandfather. They sold the grapes to local cooperatives until 2010, when neighbouring coop growers started selling their land to Lynch-Bages, Sophie decided to build a barn in her garden and buy winemaking equipment.. SKJ Domaines (Barbara & Max Julliot)

Max has been working at top wineries around the world his whole life and came back to Bordeaux, the place of his upbringing to start a family. On the side Max had an organic and biodynamic conversion consultancy firm, when a small parcel of old-vine Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon came available to rent from 2021. His only condition was that he could do a half vintage in 2020 to test the waters, soils and vines and I have managed to secure 120 of the 450 bottles produced of their very first vintage. Château de la Vieille Chapelle (Frederic Mallier) l'île du Carney, Bordeaux

On the sandy northern banks of the Dordogne river, just kilometres before it turns into the Gironde estuary, Frederic Mallier, along with his wife and two sons, have been running a 5-hectare estate since 2006. Although the estate hosts a 12th Century chapel and ephemeral outdoor bar overlooking the wide, cooling Dordogne, who's banks are only metres away, the real magic, as usual, is in the vines.

Nicole is the 16th generation of the Tapon family to make wine on Bordeaux’s iconic Right Bank. Despite the region’s reputation for red wines, Nicole is best known for her ‘Clairet de Bordeaux’ -a rare style of deeply coloured, age-worthy, dry Rosé. During our visit in 2021, we tasted the 2018, 2013, 2010 and 2006 each wine provided a compelling, gastronomic experience that combined the best of mature Claret with a fragrant, fresh lift. Antonin Jamois is orginally from Paris and after studying agronomy, moved to Madagscar for 10 years. With the arrival of his daughter, they moved back to his father in law's 6 hectare property in Lugasson in the Entres-Deux and learns how to make wine on the job. His fascination in ancient Bordelaise vareties that were forgotten about after Phylloxera, leads him to expand the 0.8 hectares of Merlot to 2.5 hectares, by planting Castets (pictured above), Mancin (also red) and most recently, Sémillon. Château Lagrange (Olivier & Laure Lacoste) Cadillac, Entres-Deux, Bordeaux

Brother and sister duo, Olivier and Laure Lacoste, who took over their family vineyards just 4 years ago and have converted it to Biodynamic farming. Château Lagrange is made up of 9 ha of white Sauvignon blanc, Sémillon, Merlot & Cabernet Sauvignon. As with many Bordeaux producers, they have slowed down on the oak and started using amphorae in the winery, which provides the wines with more freshness and fruit definition. [continue reading...]
